Gloucester Hooligans History

1997 The team was created in May 1997. We registered in the OCSL's Rec league as the Hooligans, affiliated with the Hornets organization (we wore their jerseys, etc). Rumours have it that another name considered for the team was "The Louis"! The original idea was that since we had never played together and sported a few rookies to the sport, the recreational division would be a good place to start. Our inaugural season was less than impressive, with a 3-8-4 record that included a 10 game winless streak. We managed to pick up as many wins in tournaments as in the regular season!

1998 Gloucester Hooligans Soccer Club Website was created just before the 1998 season. The team was offered a "promotion" to competitive division 7. Since there were no Hornets representatives in division 7 (including us, there were three in the recreational division), we decided to move "up", the GSA also asked us to change our name to "Hornets". 1998 was also the year we decided to field an indoor soccer team during the winter. Unfortunately we were forced to use the name "Celta". We ended up with a much improved record of 8-6-1 in the OCSL and a dismal 8-12-2 in the OCFL. We participated in the Ottawa Cup for the first and last time. We beat a Div 5 team, in the second round the Div 1 team defaulted and we were finally defeated by St Anthony's, a Premier team. Had this occured a few years back we would have received a plaque for most surprising team, managing to survive into the third round and play a Premier team. Jeremy joins the team.

1999 Gloucester Hooligans Soccer Club Website version 2.0 (current format) was created during the 1999 season. We remained in the 7th division in 1999 and was once again fairly successful finishing in fifth place with an 8-3-4 record that included a 7 game undefeated streak. We also spent most of the season in second place only to fall to 5th in the last two games. We had a lacklustre tournament year going 0-3-3. We moved to the Coliseum for the 1999 indoor campaign. We started off with a 1-6-1 record only to finish off with 7-6-2. We made the playoffs in the last two games and ended up in 5th place. Unfortunately we lost in the first playoff round. Stéphane joins the team.

2000 Finished tied for second in Division 7. We tried to return to the Hooligans name but due to a div6-div7 mix up before the season started, the Hooligans name went to the Div 6 team and we were once again stuck with the Hornets name. Poor attendance killed our chances in the Spitfires Benefit Cup (finished 0-3-0 with 0 goals for). For the first time since the team's creation we did not participate in the NCISL tournament due to lack of player participation. We moved up to Rec 1 in the revamped Coliseum. Great facilities but tough season finishing with a 3-9-3 record with very few goals for.

2001 Promoted to Division 5. Finally return to the name "Gloucester Hooligans" after a 3 year hiatus. Game 2 of the season saw the relegation of our now 5 year old green jerseys to back-up jerseys and the debut of the white jerseys. Finished the season with a 5-8-2 record in 11th place. Also made it through to the Quarter Finals of the NCISL tournament. The team returned to the Coliseum in a realigned Rec 1 division. The team was much more competitive and was knocked out of playoff contention only late in the season.

2002 Jason took over the summer version of the team, and the team failed to make the time cut for the winter version of the team. The team returned to the OCSL's Division 5. The name saga continues... The league and the GSA asked us to change our name (we settled on Gloucester H, after considering: "Aubergine", "Pewter", "Puce" and "XXX". In the end we stayed the Hooligans for some unknown (but surely good) reason. It was a tough summer season, the team integrated several rookies and was plagued by low attendance all year, only collecting it's first win in August. The team had great success in the NCISL tournament finishing runners-up losing the final 1-0 against the much hated Royals (the fourth such defeat to the Royals in this tournament). We did not play in the winter.

2003 Naveed and Gilles take over running the team. Now playing in Div 6 (now called MR4) after the 2002 relegation season. Poor follow-up performance at the NCISL tournament. The team had to integrate several rookies including 3 halfbacks, 1 forward and our keeper (although Stephane returned late in the year). As mentioned in 1997, the team could have been called "Louis" after the guy who joins the team this year. Ben also joins the team. Played a few scrimmages in a gym during the winter to keep skills and conditioning up.

2004 They're flimsy and they're yellah... No, not the opposition, our new jerseys! Revamped roster helped us turn out a much improved season in the MR4 division. After seven years with the Hooligans Erik M. takes off, and after a few years taken off Kashif returns to the team. Tariq, Sean and Adrian join the summer team, Corrie and Manuel join the winter team. The NCISL tournament was cancelled due to soggy fields caused by Hurricane Frances (12 cms of rain in Ottawa 2 days before the tournament was to start). The Hooligans took a large crew of indoor rookies into the Superdome inaugural season in a Rec division and broke all sorts of team records. Ray Martel joined the team as the indoor goal-keeper as Steph shifts to hockey.

2005 For the first time in Hooligans history, we fielded a spring team in the new Superdome and replicated our success during the 04-05 winter league. For the OCSL MR4 summer season, we put in a great effort finishing in 4th place with a 10-4-1 record. We had a tough time in the NCISL tournament, missing the cut after the round robin by a single +/- point and/or a single team point. Had the Royals used legal players throughout tournament, we would likely have gone through. We lost Jeremy, Ben and Adrian but gained Brishen. We also finished in our customary 3rd place position in the Men's Rec Superdome division in the winter with our new winter keeper Jason R.

10th anniversary season!
2006 Our 10th year as a team was a great success. We fielded a spring team for the second time, after a difficult start to the year we picked up the pieces and finished strong by winning our last 6 games including the playoff finals! Only sour note was the loss of Avik for the summer season due to a knee injury. We also became OCSL MR4 champions with a stellar undefeated season going 11-0-3. We also won our very first tournament by winning the NCISL Men's B invitational by coming back from a 1-0 deficit in the final game. We won thanks to Tri's golden goal in extra time! We were brought back down to earth with a winter season that hovered around 0.500. Corrie and Martin returned to our winter team.

2007 Feodor, Daniel and Peter joined our spring team which managed only a 4-4-1 record. No playoffs were held. For the summer league we won a promotion to the MR3 division thanks to our 2006 undefeated season. Lots of roster moves for our summer team: Feodor, Tamer, JF (returning after 3 year hiatus), Iain and our new green jerseys joined the summer team, but we lose Tri (moved away) and Martin missed most of the season due to classes. Tri and Justin did play some late season games and the end of year tournament. The winter team had a very difficult season winning only two games and tying six.

2008 We once again will play in the Superdome for Winter and Spring and the OCSL in the summer. Our Spring team didn't have any major changes from previous teams.
